Brunch, Shopping and Macarons!

It was a wonderful day out in town with Kate! We have both been holed up, working too hard, and finally had a day out to enjoy ourselves!

We started off with brunch at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, which was awesome. I had the Croque Madame which was absolutely delicious and the serving was so generous I had to leave one piece of toast behind. And I have always enjoyed the side salad they do at every outlet for their breakfast items.

After we were more than adequately fed, it was time to shop. We were barely able to move out of a certain area, because for some strange reason, the cluster of stores around that particular stretch in Ion were carrying many, many clothes in styles I love! You know how sometimes, you are out to buy but find nothing you like? And sometimes, you find a whole lot of stuff when you least expect it? That was what happened, and it hasn’t happened in a while! It was quite satisfying. Loot peekture at the end of this post!

20130516-200745.jpg

I didn’t buy this Spanish style maxi dress even though I quite liked it. Kate and I were both not sure I would wear these colours very often.

20130516-200800.jpg

Hours later, we hit Laduree, which has finally opened in Singapore! In case you don’t know, Laduree is my favourite maker of macarons. I was so excited when they opened in Singapore, but due to drowning in work, I wasn’t able to get my little ass there till now.

We went away with a little loot of six macarons. <3

Kate and I shared three macarons and I took the other three home to slowly savour… She found them still a little too sweet for her taste, though she quite liked the dark chocolate macaron.

We had an awful experience at Robert Timms, by the way. Not only did they serve me horrid coffee, the service was terrible. I won’t go into details, but we probably wouldn’t go there again.

And here’s my total loot of the day! Can you tell I am getting ready for my Chicago summer? :D

20130516-201720.jpg

I also have some exciting eBay news! Last week, I scored my first pair of vintage Frye boots and my first exotic leather anything! These luscious deep red lizard skin boots, vintage and unworn, retailed for $500 back in the day, and I scored them for… $31. Woohoo! These are auction peektures I grabbed off eBay. They are being shipped to Chicago and I will see them when I get there. You can bet your last dollar they are gonna be a big part of my summer wardrobe!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far!

From Paris to Vienna

I had a rather early flight from Paris to Vienna. Early for me because I had been waking up at about 10 am everyday. :P After a string of unfortunate events, including an airport transfer I paid for that did not turn up, I finally ended up at the airport, still in time, thankfully. But in my half-zombie sleepiness, I put a loosely capped bottle of grapefruit soda into my Sorbet Pompon. The flight was delayed, so I put Sorbet on the top of my carry-on trolley while waiting at the gate. When the gate opened, I wheeled everything along, completely forgetting that I had a bottle, loosely capped, in my bag. It was a complete disaster, the final last kick in the shin from Paris to me. The bottom of Sorbet was completely soaked. I spent a good half of the flight desperately mopping and drying stuff.

The kind Chinese couple next to me offered more tissues when they noticed what I was doing. I cleaned all my stuff and transferred them to my Envirosax, and tried not to think about Sorbet and how I was going to clean her. Had a nice chat with them and took peektures of my Laduree macarons.

I was a little nervous transiting in CDG. Paris seemed to be a bit of a jinx for me. Thankfully, nothing major happened although there was a massive line at the check-in due to disorganisation (of Air France). Took a seriously long time to check in for my flight to Singapore. My spirits lifted when I saw a Laduree counter.

Laduree takeaway counter back at CDG where I transited to go home.

Laduree takeaway counter back at CDG where I transited to go home.

After having a rather awful time in Paris, my short 1.5 day visit to Vienna more than made up for it. I was so glad I decided to do it, instead of staying in Paris for a miserable birthday. Regardless of company, I found Paris gritty, harsh and unfriendly in general. I could not feel the romance that everyone speaks of. In contrast, Vienna was peaceful, orderly, safe and happy. It was almost like a European version of Singapore, but with a rich cultural heritage and plenty more character. People there seemed genuinely nice. Parisians seem to be all about themselves (no offense to any Parisian who happens to read this, this was merely how I felt, from the vibe of the place. I’m sure there are nice people there too, but I did not meet any).

So that was my little adventure in Europe. There are many other places I would like to explore in Europe so I don’t know if I will go back to Paris. It is a wonderful place for high-end shopping, but that isn’t really a priority for me anymore. I know there are wonderful little suburbs around I should still visit, so I’m not totally writing it off. We shall see.

I still have peektures from Bangkok last year, and more peektures from the US after that, all of which are in my Sony NEX, still unprocessed. So stay tuned for those!

A day on a Singapore Navy ship

Here’s the late entry on the day we explored a Singapore Navy ship! It was a blasting hot day but it was fun checking out the ship with Kate and her kids!

An awesome day with my SF ladies!

It was a day I was so looking forward to! A day of shopping and girl talk with my SF girlfriends!

Driving into San Francisco on a gloriously sunny morning!

Shappo loves the SF sunshine!

20130222-124723.jpg

20130222-124742.jpg

While waiting for the ladies to arrive, I took a look in the shoe department of Bloomies. The selection wasn’t fantastic but I managed to get outfit peektures.

Abercrombie camisole, Abercrombie Kids jeans, Free People Ribbed Up Maxi Cardigan in Chambray, Impulse suede boots, Balenciaga moto jacket and Mini Pompon, and Shappo!

20130222-125450.jpg

20130222-125509.jpg

20130222-125533.jpg

This combination turned out better than I expected. When I walked, the maxi cardie would billow out behind me. I saw myself walking in a reflection and was pleasantly surprised at the effect LOL. A French SA trying to sell cosmetics to me said I dressed very well (could be just trying to make me buy his stuff lol).

The ladies arrived and we went to Anthropologie, where I ogled more beautiful housewares…

20130222-130448.jpg

They took me to hunt down Fiorentini and Baker boots after that. We drove to a few different shops. I have always wanted to try F+B boots but the sizing is notoriously inconsistent. Most of the popular styles like the Eternity run large, which means I’m completely sized out because I’m 35-35.5/US5-5.5.

Saw this beautiful mural while we were driving around…

20130222-130828.jpg

20130222-130844.jpg

At the final stop, I think it was the third or fourth shop, we struck gold!

20130222-130956.jpg

Here are my new Fiorentini and Baker Mike’s! I will post a separate entry on them with better peektures!

20130222-131049.jpg

Thank you, dear J and A, for making this happen!

A also took me for an extremely awesome dinner of the best cheeseburger and fries, in a classy little hotel restaurant tucked away in an almost secret location.

20130222-131338.jpg

20130222-131349.jpg

I know, I took a million peektures of the buildings. I love the brownstone buildings so much! They have so much character. I would love to live in one someday.

And then, the shopping began. We chose Copley and Prudential because of the Free People store! My second one!

20130206-013012.jpg

Fell in LOVE with the In and Out Ditsy Floral Slip but they didn’t have any in XS. This one was an S and too big for me but the skirt of the dress was just gorgeous with all the different flowy panels! Definitely ordering this online! In both colours!

Threw on my Grey Shaggy Knit just for fun. The floral slip is amazingly soft!

We stopped at a candy store to take peektures and I bought a bag of Sour Cherry Balls. Then I doubled back to buy more because JDawg likes cherry flavoured things too and would definitely eat them!

I had the most amazing frozen yoghurt at Pinkberry. I wonder if there’s one in Reno?

Spot PJ, the pink bunny!

20130206-014117.jpg

We were talking and walking along when I spotted a young lady manning a mobile store in the middle of the mall. She had a beautifully thick ponytail and her store sold all sorts of fake hair attachments. We inched closer for a look and hers was indeed a fake! She put one on me and I was sold. The second she clipped it on me, Vi was like,”OMG you have to get this!”

20130206-015954.jpg

To end our long awesome day of shopping, we went back to H Mart (Asian supermarket) and bought takeaway pho. Yes, I loved it that much. And we bought a whole bunch of Asian foodstuff too!

20130206-020129.jpg

20130206-020144.jpg

I have a new little friend on my phone, guarding the earphone jack. His name is Molang.

20130206-020313.jpg

That night at Vi’s parents’ place, we had a hilarious time removing my hair clip. Vi thought it was vaguely frightening. We put it away in a plastic bag (vs clipping it up somewhere) so it was less scary. I got up to use the bathroom at 5 am and did wonder briefly if I would see my fake hair walking around.

The next day, Vi left to go back home to New Hampshire. I stayed on, did my work and Vi’s mom fed me home-cooked noodles for dinner. It was absolutely lovely being with them.

And early Monday morning (too early omg), I was off flying back to Reno. The sky was beautiful then!

20130206-021025.jpg

It was such a wonderful holiday with my BFF, getting to see her home, and meeting her parents again after Taiwan. I had an absolute ball. Looking forward to the next time!

Phew! Finally got this massive post out of the way! I have accumulated heaps of peektures since coming back to Reno so those will be coming up soon! Thank you for reading!

Leaving New Hampshire for Boston!

Friday came around and it was time to leave Vi’s beautiful home. I was sad to go, but I know I will surely be back again!

Had to take a mod shot with Gris Poivre MPP and Grey Carmens before we left. It won’t be easy to find such an awesome room to take peektures in!

20130204-143238.jpg

Then I switched out the Frye’s for my Bearpaws, and Gris Poivre for Cassis, added a Shaggy Knit sweater and Chan Luu scarf, and Vi took the most awesome peektures of me in their snow laden back yard!

20130204-143602.jpg

I just love these peektures! Absolutely priceless and captured so well! Vi, you are amazing. Loves ya!

Look at how gorgeous it was in her back yard, with the rays of light coming through the woods…

20130204-143905.jpg

20130204-143925.jpg

Couldn’t help taking a peekture of her wonderful little doll room. The window is just darling! She thinks it’s a mess but I think it’s lovely.

20130204-143755.jpg

Packed up and off we went in her SUV!

20130204-144050.jpg

Shappo enjoyed his seat in the sun. <3

20130204-144135.jpg

After dropping my bags at her parents’ place, we headed to Burlington Mall for our first hit of shopping!

Here we are at Macy’s trying on furry hats! We had so much fun… I wish we lived closer to each other!

20130204-144319.jpg

Aaaaaaand I finally visited a Free People store in person! OMG I was so excited!

20130204-144456.jpg

The store was beautiful! Especially the fitting rooms!

20130204-144558.jpg

20130204-144616.jpg

Vi’s fitting room had a gorgeous bench!

20130204-144703.jpg

Here we go with the fitting room adventures! This is my outfit to start with, and my incredibly comfy Bearpaws.

20130204-144819.jpg

So stoked to find the Shaggy Knit in Ballet. The colour is much nicer in person than online. It looks like a pale pastel pink online but is richer in person, almost a soft dusky pink. Loved it!

20130204-144950.jpg

The Tupello Honey Top was great for layering but we decided I didn’t need it. Vi was so proud of me LOL.

20130204-145051.jpg

And the fave of the day, the Annie Oakley Lace Skirt! This was a skirt I wanted for the longest time but wasn’t sure how it was gonna fit me. So glad to see it and try it in person because it was PERFECT!

20130204-145404.jpg

The cream version was beautiful as well, but the black was pure love! I may have to consider the cream one later on. It’s not often I find a beautiful maxi skirt that I don’t have to take to a seamstress for alterations! It is a little pricey, but the detailing is beautifully intricate. Worth every penny.

I also finally went to Anthropologie in person! Looked at the beautiful homeware but nothing jumped out at me.

20130204-150116.jpg

After hitting several shops, we were pretty wiped out. Stopped for a recharge by having the most delicious, piping hot pho at the food court of an Asian supermarket. It really hit the spot on a cold evening!

20130204-145829.jpg

With our tummies full and happy, we had a final round of shopping at Old Navy and scored some incredible finds. A zip-up hoodie for $2.99! Thermal tops for $3! A Free People-ish lace skirt for $12! And warm, comfy home pants for $10 each!

Vi’s mom put me in a lovely basement room where I had my own private bathroom and a beautiful daybed to sleep in. I loved the sheets she put on for me!

20130204-150540.jpg

Shappo was tired too…

20130204-150613.jpg

It was a super long day we had. I was glad to get into bed and slept awesome that night!

The next day, we hit Boston proper! Stay tuned!

Off to New Hampshire!

Here I am in my favourite seat on the plane, heading to the Manchester airport in New Hampshire. I think the Southwest logo is kinda cute.

20130202-183630.jpg

20130202-183654.jpg

Vi put me in the most amazing room I have ever had the good fortune to sleep in. I absolutely loved it. I wish I could live here forever!

Not only was the room beautiful, the snow scene outside was just incredible as well. It is perfect for someone who works at home. Lots of sunlight, lots of snow, lots of nature.

20130202-183727.jpg

20130202-183851.jpg

20130202-183911.jpg

We went out for an amble around the nearest town and shops (which weren’t very near lol). Had an early dinner at a lovely little bar/restaurant.

20130202-184332.jpg

20130202-184358.jpg

20130202-184423.jpg

That night, it snowed. And it sure was heavy! I was watching it from the basement with Vi. I miss being there!

20130202-184528.jpg

That’s the backyard. Everything got whitewashed. And then some.

We hung out, yabbered, she took the dogs out every few hours, we watched teevee. It was so nice not to have to chat by text or Skype!

I slept so well that night in that beautiful room with the beautiful sheets. Definitely missing that wonderfully thick floral comforter. Waking up to gorgeous daylight, surrounded by so much beauty, really puts one in an awesome mood.

20130202-185100.jpg

20130202-185124.jpg

20130202-185147.jpg

I put on my Bearpaws, which I bought at Macy’s in San Francisco. They are shearling boots, and so warm and comfy! They were absolutely perfect for the snowy weather in New Hampshire! I was so glad I bought them.

20130202-185418.jpg

Mike and Vi both had the day off from work, so off we went for some shopping, sights and food!

20130202-185548.jpg

20130202-185612.jpg

Look at the snow scene outside the window! It was surreal. I felt like I was in an anime.

20130202-185715.jpg

The Powerhouse Mall was adorable. Loved the oldskool finishes and the circus hanging decor.

20130202-185835.jpg

20130202-185853.jpg

20130202-185910.jpg

We saw the most hilarious books in a tiny bookstore in Vermont.

20130202-190016.jpg

And pottered around the little shops there…

20130202-190100.jpg

I was in my Abercrombie & Fitch down puffer coat, Free People Shaggy Knit in Natural, Chan Luu scarf in Azalea, Free People Fair Isle leggings, Bearpaw shearling boots and Vi’s awesome wool skirt. Took Sorbet Pompon because of her wonderful capacity. It was so easy to throw mittens and beanie and water bottle in, when in a snowy climate like that!

20130202-190414.jpg

We went to a Korean restaurant for dinner. As we ate, a mini blizzard was going on outside! It was indescribably enjoyable to have a piping hot stone bowl of Bibimbap with the weather going apeshit outside.

20130202-190635.jpg

20130202-190719.jpg

20130202-190756.jpg

We had to seriously bundle up to survive the walk to the car! And it was wonderful to get in from the cold to a warm and beautiful home, where we could watch the snow really coming down.

Lots more peektures coming up… Stay tuned!

A Vienna Preview

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I am drowning in a million things, as usual! But I will quickly post a few peektures from my Austrian friend W, who was so very kind to host me on my birthday! And at such a short notice too! Something like, 12 hours. LOL. I basically decided I did not want to stay in Paris, chatted with him, and he invited me over. It was late arvo, and I booked a flight from Paris to Vienna for the very next morning, which was my birthday morning. I seem to be getting the hang of this being-spontaneous thing.

A visit to the United Nations office!

W works for the UN, hence I was allowed this very special visit!

A quick walk through the carnival!

We went on their version of our Singapore Flyer

It was a very oldskool type of ferris wheel. The carriage was made of wood and very rickety! Amazingly, I managed to stay calm. Maybe it was a little surreal that I actually upped and went to Vienna and I didn’t quite believe I was there. LOL.

My hand was gripping the rail rather tightly LOL

My birthday dinner!

It was an excellent meal

My birthday cake!

No candles but I was happy enough to be in nice company for my birthday instead of being miserable in Paris!

Massive thanks to my wonderful friend W, who hosted me at such a short notice and was such an awesome tour guide! My travel companion for Paris was one serious jerk and fortunately, these 1.5 days in Vienna more than made up for it. I will definitely be posting about the entire experience soon!

But for now! I am in a frenzy of preparing to leave on Saturday for Bangkok, to meet a very special someone. I have more than 400 peektures from Paris and Vienna, and I bet I will come back from Bangkok with lots more. I will try to post when I can, as soon as I can! Thank you for your patience! :)

Open Door Policy

Dinner with a lovely bunch, when Hosea was back for a visit!

ODP!

The foie gras (pate) starter was divine

I think this was my favourite dish of the whole night.

Slices of fish were hiding under this

Anchovies, olives, fried cheese…

Fried chicken done two ways

Risotto with truffle oil – best main of the night

Prawn risotto

Beef stewed for goodness knows how long

Lamb stewed for goodness knows how long

A wonderful berry sorbet with strawberries

Chocolate pistachio souffle

Raspberry souffle

Apple crumble

Getting ready to pour the sauce

Here we go…

We thought the sauce would sink in

What’s going on?

I guess it was meant to sit on top?

Julia and Hosea

Hosea and Val

Souffles ready to be eaten

The bunch

A spunky interior

I like those floorboards.

Logo in black would be more visible though

Will try the coffee another day… in the day

Deliberate mismatched details and scruffiness

I like deliberate scruffiness.

A random condo nearby

Those trees in front are quite a nice touch.

Some of the food peektures didn’t turn out well… We were fiddling a lot with the settings, trying to get it right, but somehow focusing was a little tricky. And the LCD likes to trick me. It shows me what I think is a clear, focused shot, but when I upload it into Aperture, it’s actually a little off. Julia took the shot of the anchovies, olives and fried cheese and it was the same thing – I checked and it looked fine, until it was in my iMac! Rawr.

So, the food at ODP was quite good. The service was good too. Personally, the mains were not my usual preference for mains (I like my steaks, lamb chops, potatoes etc) but they were above average. The pate starter was so good I would actually go and eat that alone. However, it was on a special menu and not the standard menu, so I don’t know if it’s a temporary thing. ODP’s coffee is from 40 Hands, so I have been meaning to try it. It was way too late for coffee though, so I shall be back another day!
