Good morning!

Sleeping in the daytime is super tiring. There is construction going on in my neighbourhood so they start hammering and drilling away at 9 in the morning. Due to the complexity of my current project, I have been working very long hours everyday, usually overnight till the morning. This means I have been sleeping un-restfully for the past weeks, maybe a month by now. Urgh!

Thankfully, my face is holding up. I will do a post on Mario Badescu products soon… Just need to get on top of work for now.

I am so in love with my patchwork quilt I brought home from Reno, NV. <3 So glad I decided to cart it all the way back!

Someone sent me this in the morning. :)

Have an awesome day, everyone! :)

Cleo Hair and Make

A few weeks ago, I got my hair done at a Japanese salon which looked very promising from all the reviews and peektures I had seen online – Cleo Hair and Make at Parco Millenia Walk, all the way from Tokyo.

As many of you know, I have had (very) long, (very) straight hair for the longest time (something ridiculous like 20 years). I have always loved having straight hair… but as age creeps up with me, my hair has been thinning. Sigh. And when it’s straight, it looks that much thinner. I toyed with the idea of changing my hair strategy for a while, did a bit of research (okay, a lot!) and settled on Japanese stylist, Sio at Cleo Hair and Make, based on his reputation to be able to create big, gorgeous waves that are usually only achievable with temporary tonging.

Quite a while ago, I did try a perm but the curls turned out pretty tight. While my friends all loved the change, I did not actually like it very much until it grew out some and the curls ended up at the ends of my hair. This worked well for me because I like to be able to run my fingers through some of my hair. And I like to blow-dry the roots and fringe straight.

So… Off I went, on a Saturday arvo. Samantha, their interpreter was there to help with any communication problems, but Sio was mostly able to understand what I wanted (he is very observant and awesome at guessing what you want even with a language barrier, just by reading your expression and gestures). I told them I didn’t want tight curls, but big waves to make my hair look fuller, and didn’t know if the waves would go straight after a while if the curls weren’t too tight. I also needed to touch up the roots for my white hair, and some of my fringe wasn’t behaving well due to my natural curl. So it was decided I would do all these in two sessions, because it would take too long to do everything in a single day.

My first session included a hair cut, and the colouring for my white roots. Sio also tonged my hair afterwards, to give me an idea of how the curls were going to look at the next session. I was impressed with the way he handled hair. When you have very long hair, it is quite easy to tell a stylist who is experienced from one who is not. I’m not sure how Sio did it, but I could not detect a single tug or any sign of force when he was untangling my hair after washing. That, in itself, was a miracle. He was very meticulous, sensitive, and extremely polite. I couldn’t wait to see the final result at the next session.

20130430-204030.jpg

20130430-204053.jpg

My second appointment was on a Thursday arvo. After a short discussion, where I told him I didn’t want my fringe too flat, yet I needed a way to get it to be smoother, he proposed to let him use the perming solution on it without actually curling it. This would save us one step (and S$100 for me). I thought it was an excellent idea! And perming commenced…

20130430-204137.jpg

20130430-204220.jpg

20130430-204259.jpg

As you can see, he is also quite funny! :)

20130430-204338.jpg

And I must say… Sio is brilliant. I believe I have found my hairstyle for the next 10 years. Maybe 20 years. Dammit… This means if I leave Singapore, I’m going to have to come back every 6 months or so to do my hair. His idea for smoothing my fringe worked like a charm. The curls/waves on my hair ends turned out beautifully. It was a little curly at the salon, but not so tight that I had anything to complain about. When I walked out, I felt absolutely fabulous.

And when I got home, my hair had a chance to settle for a few hours, and became the big waves I had asked him for. Sio is a hair genius.

20130430-204424.jpg

It has now been a few weeks since my hair was done, and I’m happy to report my waves are not straightening out. I wake up with fabulous hair every morning. Loves it! <3

Goodbye, flat hair! :) Thank you, Sio! You are my new hair saviour!

The Day I Did My Hair

Uh oh… I have so many peektures I hardly know where to start posting. I should really post snippets as and when I can, so it doesn’t snowball! Snowballing is a problem around here. Along with tumbleweeds.

After Atlanta, I was in New Hampshire and Massachusetts last week, visiting my BFF Vi. We had so much fun! I miss her already! But I will try to post from where I left off and hopefully we will get up to date soon-ish. :P

This was a random day when JDawg picked me up from home at lunch to take me to the hair salon near his office so I could get my hair roots done. Too much white hair. :(

I was wearing my Adobe Rose Chan Luu scarf. I love this shade so much. It is the perfect rosy taupe neutral.

20130130-002148.jpg

The sweet salon lady gave me really big hair. LOL! I wasn’t quite used to it. I would love to have thicker hair but somehow it wasn’t sitting the right way when certain strands go astray.

20130129-231039.jpg

I have more peektures of the salon in the Sony NEX. It was a very pretty salon! I loved their decor.

After getting my hair done, I worked off my MacAir in JDawg’s office for a bit before I snuck out for food and coffee at a cafe nearby. I don’t even remember the name of the cafe anymore. This is also why I shouldn’t wait so long to post!

But the mac and cheese was quite good. The coffee was meh. I haven’t had good coffee around here yet.

20130129-231301.jpg

20130129-231321.jpg

20130129-231343.jpg

20130129-231401.jpg

I sat there for a while, trying to decide if I was meant to leave a tip on the table when I leave. LOL! Tried to observe other people and no one was doing it. So I didn’t. Later on, upon clarification with JDawg, I learnt that in such situations like cafes, there is usually a tip jar at the counter and people tip when they pay. Isn’t that premature tipping though?

I was wearing my fave sweater, the Shaggy Knit from Free People, under my Bal moto. This one is black. I have a tonne of them by now. I just love the texture!

20130129-231535.jpg

20130129-231851.jpg

There’s a nice view from his office windows…

20130129-231942.jpg

Then he took me to the cutest little cafe, Homage, and I worked there while he gymmed. It was like being in someone’s home. But it’s a pity they are so uptight about photography. I had to sneak a few shots. I think I have some on the Sony NEX too. I will probably process those when I get back to Singapore in March. So in the meantime, you guys get to enjoy crappy iPhone peektures.

20130129-232144.jpg

Macarons! Very pretty but way too sweet. Didn’t come close to Laduree!

20130129-232221.jpg

20130129-232242.jpg

By night time I was tired of my hair (she did a great job on the colour though) and threw on a black beanie. The long skirt is by Splendid from Shopbop.

Okay, bedtime for bB! I will resume posting tomorrow!

I hope everyone has been well!

Jane Iredale

My Jane Iredale stuff has finally arrived! I don’t know what’s wrong with Singpost but the package arrived in Singapore 31 July and took seven days to get to my door. Not impressed. Thankfully it arrived before I’m off to Sydney!

20120806-172944.jpg

Glow Time Full Coverage BB Cream (BB3)
Jane Iredale PurePressed Base (Radiant)
Jane Iredale Lip Drink SPF15 x2
Jane Iredale PurePressed Blush (Barely Rose)
Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip & Cheek Stain (Forever Pink)
Jane Iredale Flocked Sponge x2

20120806-173004.jpg

They were so kind to send me two little samples – Longest Lash Mascara and PureLash Extender & Conditioner. How thoughtful of them! They must have looked at my order and gone, “She is missing some eye make-up”. LOL! And I much prefer mascara over eyeshadow. :)

20120806-173020.jpg

So, so glad they arrived in time. Now, if only endless.com would just ship my boots already!

Charlene’s Beauty Studio, Dazzling Cafe, Taipei

Sorry for the sudden silence! bB had the most crippling headache ever. Thankfully now under control, but am still feeling kinda slow.

So the next day after Raohe Night Market and Wufenpu, bB was determined to make it for the hotel brekkie just once. It was my very last day at Eastern Star Hotel. LOL! It turns out brekkie was quite good. Congee wasn’t plain, it had sweet potato chunks. And there was a selection of pickled vegetables and other stuff to choose from.

20120417-133655.jpg

I had a second round of egg and bacon with toast. Good of them to provide different options!

20120417-133712.jpg

After that, I made my way to my nail appointment that was made the day before. This was a little nail studio I stumbled upon. It was actually a little room in the back of a clothing store. By appointment only.

20120417-133733.jpg

20120417-133752.jpg

20120417-133809.jpg

Charlene served me warm water in the most adorable cup. She told me it was from Daiso nearby. Unfortunately, they were sold out when I went to have a look.

20120417-133827.jpg

It was a very cosy little nail studio. If I were a Taipei resident, I wouldn’t mind coming here regularly for nail services.

20120417-133844.jpg

20120417-133858.jpg

20120417-133916.jpg

This was how my toe nails looked before (after she removed my existing French Gelish). My right big toe nail was breaking in the middle. I should have gotten my nails done (and trimmed) before going to Taipei, so they wouldn’t break if I wore closed shoes, but I couldn’t get an appointment before my flight.

20120417-133936.jpg

After Charlene was done with them. She did an awesome job.

20120417-133954.jpg

And an awesome job on my hands too. Total cost for fingers and toes in French Gelish was NT4,000. No cheaper than Singapore, but I’d say her handiwork was better than many of the manicurists in Singapore.

20120417-134011.jpg

It turned out to be a funny and good chain of events because if I had gotten my nails done before Taipei, they wouldn’t have broken, and I wouldn’t have needed to find a nail studio to fix them. If I didn’t get to meet Charlene, I wouldn’t have found out from her where to buy great, plain tees at Shilin Night Market, which was the only item of clothing I was hoping to stock up on in Taipei.

20120417-134028.jpg

With my nails all perfect, I was starving. I noticed this place, Dazzling Cafe, a few steps away, and vaguely remembered reading about their fantastic toasts. It was a rainy day and there was no queue, so I decided to try it out.

20120417-134045.jpg

20120417-134102.jpg

Lovely white interior. bB likes white interiors. :)

20120417-134124.jpg

My strawberry toast came looking amazing… The cafe is very encouraging towards patrons taking peektures of their food. They actually serve this to you, let you take peektures, and then offer to cut it up for you after that.

20120417-134140.jpg

To my further amazement, the toast was sliced up to reveal ready toasted fingers inside! The adorable waitress placed everything expertly and gave advice on how best to eat it. LOL! Everything was well planned. And it tasted awesome too.

20120417-134156.jpg

I had a fruit tea to go along. Can’t remember the name now but it was a berry tea, which was quite lovely.

20120417-134245.jpg

20120417-134301.jpg

This was bB, all wrapped up on a cold, rainy day in Taipei. How cute are those little plant figures? This was in the Ming Yao Departmental Store building, when I went looking for the pink cup that Charlene had.

20120417-134319.jpg

20120417-134334.jpg

And after that, it was time to shift hotels…

Oriole and Domani on a Friday

Friday was another errand day!

Had an awesome ketchup with John over an awesome cup of coffee at Oriole. It was so good to see him again! It’s funny how we became friends because of spiders. He was such a wonderful source of support and knowledge, and even gave me my most loved spideykids. Without him and his help, bB would not have had so much fun as a spideymommy.

For those who don’t know, Oriole is known for great coffee. The owner, Keith, whom I got to know some years ago through Jenn, is an award-winning barista and also owns several other awesome restaurants.

20120401-015515.jpg

bB was bent on having Japanese pasta for dinner that day, and was looking forward to her favourite cod roe pasta at Pasta de Waraku at Heeren. However! It seems Heeren is about to undergo some major renovations and almost all the shops were closed! How disappointing!

The alternative was Domani at Ngee Ann City. I actually remember having had a cod roe pasta at this joint in the past. However! After queuing and being shown a table, I inquired and they no longer have cod roe pasta on the menu! So bB settled for their most popular slipper lobster pasta. I must say the slipper lobster pasta was not too bad at all. Generous portion of slipper lobsters and the pasta was nicely al dente. It was a pretty big serving, and bB finished all of it (with some curious stares from people sitting nearby). :)

20120401-015527.jpg

End of the day Face – bB tried the Lioele Blooming Gloss in Flower Pink. Wore it all day, touched up once after dinner, and loves it as much as the Vanilla Pink! Between these and my Lancome Juicy Tubes, I reckon I never have to try other lipglosses again!

20120401-015544.jpg

There is also another tee-shirt loot from H&M. Peektures to come tomorrow. :)

Lioele road test

As promised, bB tested some of the Lioele products that arrived yesterday. It was a very full day of errands today, so it would be the perfect road test!

Starting with clean face and Jane Iredale powder… No blusher, no lip product.

20120328-234134.jpg

After Carry Me Blusher in Cutie Pink and Blooming Gloss in Vanilla Pink.

20120328-234147.jpg

I’m not sure if it’s just me? But the Carry Me Blusher was rather difficult to apply. Maybe that is how it is in the beginning, when the powder has yet to saturate the puff. I started out by puffing it for a long time on my hand, then on my knuckle (when I got impatient), to get the pink powder through to the top of the puff. Then, it seemed impossible to get the puff anymore saturated no matter how hard I was hitting my knuckles (very little pink powder was showing on the puff at this point), so I tried it on my cheeks. I puffed and puffed and then puffed some more. At one point, I felt as if I was punching my own face, but with very comfortable, cute, spongy punches. A long, long time later, I finally achieved something close to my usual density.

I wonder if this is normal? I guess I will observe and see if it gets better with subsequent use.

The colour is a lovely delicate pink, and the staying power was awesome. It looked pretty much exactly the same when I removed it at night.

As for the Blooming Gloss, it was a total winner. It glided on wonderfully, and I love the colour. I applied once, blotted, and applied again. I didn’t bother to touch up all day after that, and while it’s normal for any lipgloss to wear off, my lips were not completely bare after drinks and dinner. There was still a hint of colour and I could still feel the moisture of the gloss.

I also touched up my nose with the Lioele Oil Paper Pact today. The powder is very fine and has a powdery scent similar to that of baby powder. I personally love this sort of scent, so I thought it was quite pleasant. I found the mattifying power to be not as good as Jane Iredale (if I had touched up with Jane Iredale instead), but it’s still good enough as a touch-up compact on-the-go.

If you are interested in these products, you can find them at Pretty and Cute, and there is a code klove10 for a 10% discount at checkout.

Here is my previous post on the products when they arrived – Lioele cosmetics haul.

Lioele cosmetics haul

bB is not even close to being remotely a beauty blogger in any way, since she does not wear very much make-up. To be honest, I wear zero eye make-up because I find that most products irritate my eye area. Once in a very long while, I may put a little mascara on. I believe I have not done that since last August. I also find that wearing eye make-up seems to enhance my already-goldfish eyes in a very scary way. Obviously bB hasn’t put in the effort to learn how to put eye make-up on properly. :)

So! Make-up for bB consists of a mineral powder and blusher, both from Jane Iredale. I have always enjoyed this simple look and I think it works best for me.

But I do enjoy reading and watching Jen from From Head to Toe. I love her product reviews, especially for face, skin, hair, and whatever else that isn’t about eye make-up. LOL! She is a guru at make-up as well, and always looks impeccable. Her videos are very fun to watch!

In her recent Seven Deadly Sins entry, she mentioned the Lioele Blooming Glosses. Lipgloss is something bB does wear and actually enjoys wearing. After looking at her swatches here, bB looked at two more of her review entries on more Lioele products here and here, and was sold!

A week later, a little brown box arrived from Pretty and Cute.

20120327-171220.jpg

Foam peanuts always remind me of my big sister in New York. We used to joke about how she would send me a big box of my stuff with a tonne of these foam peanuts which would get everywhere! LOL! Thankfully, this is a small box.

20120327-171237.jpg

What a lovely sight! Lioele does pretty and cute packaging really well. <3

20120327-171252.jpg

From left: Lioele Oil Paper Pact (this is a powder compact), Lioele Carry Me Blusher, Lioele Essential Donut Glo-Stick (a lipstick which feels like a lip balm), Lioele Blooming Glosses, Skin79 BB cream (free sample), and this ridiculous red bow thingy which I have absolutely no idea what to do with.

20120327-171305.jpg

20120327-171318.jpg

The Lioele Oil Paper Pact is so adorable. I have wanted to get myself a simple, fuss-free powder compact for a while now, to toss into my bag for just-in-case moments. Even though I have never had to touch up my face after using Jane Iredale (for several years now), I like the idea of having a (cheaper) powder compact in my bag anyway. And since I will be travelling next week, it seemed like a good time to get this.

20120327-171337.jpg

Besides being adorable, the case looks like it will be fine with a bit of rough and tumble. Another deciding factor for me was that the sponge puff sits on a transparent flap, separating it from the powder. Love it. Very hygienic.

20120327-171350.jpg

How cute is this blusher? It’s the Carry Me Blusher in Cutie Pink. I may or may not bring my Jane Iredale blusher and separate brush, so this will be very handy.

20120327-171407.jpg

I loved the way this colour (Milky Pink) of the Essential Donut Glo-Stick looked on Jen, so I had to try it. I’ve already applied it once and it is quite awesome! Very smooth and moisturising, and the colour is perfect. On me, it is the my-lips-but-better sort of colour, which I always love. I will test this product further in Taiwan where it’s colder.

20120327-171419.jpg

Here we have the Lioele Blooming Glosses which have gotten so many glowing reviews, not just from Jen but from other ladies as well (you can read reviews on the product page).

20120327-171430.jpg

They do indeed smell as amazing as what everyone says! Can’t wait to test one out tomorrow when I go out for errands.

20120327-171444.jpg

Pretty and Cute lets customers choose their preferred free sample with their orders. I think this is great – I always appreciate sites that do this, instead of sending something totally useless.

20120327-171456.jpg

Which leads me to this red ribbon thingy. What in the world is this for? LOL! I might have to give it to my niece to play with.
