The next macaron shoppe under scrutiny by bB was Jewels Artisan Chocolate at Orchard Central. The peektures of their macarons look very similar to Laduree’s, so bB was rather excited!
The silly thing was our poor planning that day. bB and Kate were shopping all day, on a very hot day, and basically the macarons had a bit of a melt-down before making it into the fridge at home!
Jewels gives out these adorable macaron bookmarks, which also have their macaron menu printed on the reverse. Awesome idea! Every macaron lover would take one home and this ensures that no one forgets Jewels’ macarons.
I passed on Simply Dark and Butterfly Pea Bloom because they didn’t appeal to me. Instead, I had doubles of Raspberry and Black Palm Island Salt (their best seller). Macarons are S$2 per piece.
The sizes of the macarons were not consistent. The grey macaron (Butterscotch) was so large it could not fit properly in the box and actually cracked.
The famous Black Palm Island Salt macaron has salted egg yolk in the filling and it was quite divine! To be honest, I could have an entire box of just this flavour alone.
The raspberry was quite forgettable. Not tart enough. Maybe the jam wasn’t spread properly.
My next favourite of the lot was Brun (hazelnut and almond praline paste).
Brun was smooth and delicately creamy. I was surprised by how much I liked it. Definitely am happy to eat this one again!
Passion fruit was another forgettable flavour.
Disappointing because I thought the fruit flavours would be very nice.
I’d like to try Butterscotch again before I form an opinion on it. This one had a very dry shell but the caramel filling was delicious.
Did not enjoy the Green Tea macaron. It was too sweet, too dry, and the combination just didn’t taste good.
Nomming on the second round of Raspberry and Black Palm Island Salt confirms my earlier opinion – Raspberry is not tart enough and Black Island Palm Salt rocks.
Jewels’ macarons are very delicate. Even more delicate than Laduree’s. There seems to be a bit of inconsistency in standard between the flavours though. There is also an intriguing garlic macaron which was somehow not included in the box. So bB’s next box of macarons from Jewels will consist of: 4x Black Palm Island Salt, 2x Brun, 1x Butterscotch, 1x Black Garlic.
Thumbs up on the good flavours. Hopefully they churn out more flavours in the future and do away with the forgettable ones. The texture is a stark contrast to robust ET macarons. I’d say sometimes bB is in the mood for one, sometimes the other.
